Mosaic Mirror Frame
Our Place - Episode OPL-219
Air Date
April 12, 2001

Author Tracy Graivier Bell demonstrates how to use broken dishes and china to create a mosaic frame for a mirror or photograph.

Materials:

  • safety goggles
  • work gloves
  • tile or glass nippers
  • assorted dishes
  • spatula
  • ceramic-tile adhesive (mastic )
  • frame (a flat frame is easiest to work with)
  • grout
  • rubber gloves
  • clean dry cloth
  • household cement or other strong bonding adhesive

Steps:

* Note: Always wear safety goggles and work gloves when breaking dishes.

1.Use tile or glass nippers to clip dishes into small, irregular pieces (figure A).

2.Use a spatula to apply a thin layer of ceramic-tile adhesive onto a small section of the frame.

3.Place dish fragments close together on the adhesive (figure B), randomly mixing the patterns and solids. Continue to cover the frame. Allow to dry for 48 hours.

4.Prepare and carefully apply grout with hands while wearing rubber gloves (figure C). (Grout should have consistency of oatmeal.) Fill spaces between the fragments. As the grout begins to set, wipe the excess from the fragments and allow the grout to dry for about 20 minutes.

5.Wipe off remaining chalky residue with a clean, dry cloth (figure D). Don't allow the grout to dry for too long, or you won't be able to wipe off the residue.

6.Use household cement to attach any 3-D decorative elements to frame.
